One of the most common reasons for visiting a chiropractor is for back pain treatment. If you've been wondering how chiropractors help eliminate back pain, you'll find the following information very useful.

Back pain often occurs because one or more vertebrae in the back is misaligned. This is known as a subluxation, and can result in disruptions of the nervous system due to excess pressure on the nerves. Not only can this produce back pain, but it can also create other health problems such as headaches, allergies or difficulty breathing.

A chiropractor's goal is to properly align the spine to eliminate subluxations, allowing nerve impulses to flow freely again. This is done by performing an "adjustment" to manipulate vertebrae into their proper position. Adjustments may be performed manually or with the use of a special instrument.

More than one spinal adjustment is typically needed to correct subluxations. The number of visits you require will vary based upon your age, condition of your spine, and the goals you desire from treatment. The way your body responds to treatment will play a role in this as well. As such, two patients with nearly identical conditions could require very different treatment programs.

Even when multiple sessions are required, most patients do tend to notice some improvement after the first few visits. What's more, chiropractic treatment is likely to provide you with longer-lasting results than surgery or medication, which only serve to mask your symptoms.
