Even though the chiropractic profession continues to grow, some people still hesitate to seek help from a professional chiropractor. In most cases, this is due to misconceptions or a lack of understanding about the profession. Here are 5 common myths about chiropractors explained:
Chiropractic treatment hurts.
There are many techniques used by chiropractors. All of them are safe and effective – and none are intended to inflict pain on the patient. Many patients even report a sense of relief as adjustments are being made.
Chiropractors are not real doctors.
Chiropractors are medical professionals. Following completion of a college or university chiropractic program, they are granted a D.C., or Doctorate of Chiropractic. Similar to M.D. candidates, chiropractic students must pass national and state board examinations.
Medical doctors and chiropractors do not like each other.
Medical doctors and chiropractors recognize their practices work in synergy for the benefit of patients. Many hospitals have chiropractors on staff, and most private medical and chiropractic practices network and consult with each other to best address the needs of their patients.
Once you start chiropractic treatment, you can never stop.
Receiving chiropractic treatments does not in itself cause additional visits to the chiropractor. Instead, if the factors that led you to seek help in the first place persist, so will the need for chiropractic treatment.
When the chiropractor "pops" my joints, it is doing damage.
The popping sound is common during a chiropractic treatment. It is the result of the joint releasing nitrous oxide, which causes the noise. There are no negative effects as a result and the joint is completely unaffected.
Hopefully we have dispelled these myths for you, but if you still have questions about how Lexington Family Chiropractic can help you, contact us for a consultation.
