A chiropractor does more than just make adjustments of the neck and back. Foot adjustments are also performed to prevent conditions that make walking or standing painful. Here are just a few ways your Lexington, KY chiropractor can help alleviate foot pain. The foot actually consists of three arches. Many people visit our clinic after experiencing pain in their center or metatarsal arch. This commonly occurs whenever a metatarsal bone falls beneath the arch. If left untreated, this could eventually result in callouses or even stress fractures. Several adjustments could be needed to move the metatarsal bone back into its correct position. In the meantime, you may need to limit the amount of time you spend on your feet.
Metatarsalgia causes pain and swelling in the ball of the foot, and is caused by inflammation of the nerve that runs through the metatarsal bones. Wearing improper footwear can cause this condition, which can often be rectified with chiropractic adjustments to take pressure off the nerves. Custom footwear may be recommended as well.
Plantar fasciitis is more common among people with flat feet or those who are overweight. It is related to a lack of support in the flat band of tissue along the bottom of the foot, which is known as the plantar fascia. It can result in heel pain that is typically more intense in the morning, and tends to subside as the day wears on. Chiropractic adjustments, along with learning new stretching techniques and wearing custom orthotics can typically provide relief from this condition without surgery.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs whenever there is a narrowing of the tarsal tunnel that runs through the feet. Symptoms include ankle pain, numbness and tingling, all of which may come and go and vary in intensity. Ice, rest, and providing proper support to the feet is often recommended in addition to chiropractic treatment.
