Have you ever watched a baby or toddler sleep? The wild positions they manage to fall asleep in are unbelievable. It is hard to imagine being able to sleep in awkward poses without waking up to some major neck pain. As we age our necks and back require better support, and you can help your body out by choosing a pillow that offers you the support you need while you sleep. Sometimes your pillow selection could be the difference between a strong quality of life and chronic pain.
Here is our simple guide for how to choose the right pillow. You should choose a pillow based on the position you like to sleep in.
Back Sleepers need thinner pillowsIdeally you should look for a pillow that is bulkier under your neck and thinner under your head to fit the natural curve of your spine. A down pillow allows you to adjust the bulk of the pillow to fit your neck, or you can find pre-shaped memory foam and latex pillows. You should also consider placing a pillow under your knees while you sleep.
Side Sleepers need thicker pillowsYour head should not tilt at a strange angle when you sleep, instead your pillow should have enough thickness to line up your neck properly. A foam pillow is less likely to break down and become too thin over time, putting undue pressure on your neck. You may want to put a pillow between your knees while you sleep on your side.
Stomach Sleepers need flat pillows.You may even want to skip the pillow altogether if you sleep on your stomach, and instead put a pillow under your stomach to support your spine as you sleep.
