Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa, or sac of fluid between the tendon and the bone. The bursa functions as a gliding surface that reduces friction between body tissues. When inflammation occurs, the bursa cannot do its job and this results in stiffness and joint pain. One type of inflammation is Trochanteric bursitis, which is the most common cause of hip pain and tenderness. If you experience hip pain when lying on your side, or from physical movements including getting out of a plush chair, exiting a vehicle from a seated position, or walking up a flight of stairs, you may be experiencing symptoms of trochanteric bursitis. Trochanteric bursitis can be caused by an acute injury, prolonged pressure on a bursa, or activities that require repeated movements.

Hip pain caused by inflamed bursae can be treated with splints, hot and cold applications, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections, and chiropractic therapy. The purpose of these treatments is to reduce pain and inflammation to preserve mobility and prevent any related complications.

Chiropractic care for trochanteric bursitis involves adjustments to the spine and joints which relieves pressure from the bursa and tendons. These manipulations not only relieve pain and inflammation byt re-align and repair the underlying source of the pain. Other chiropractic methods such as stretching, trigger point therapy, and electric stimulation may also be successful in treating bursitis.

The best treatment for trochanteric bursitis is prevention. Avoiding activities that put unnecessary or prolonged, repetitive stress on the hips can minimize the chance of inflammation. But if you are experiencing hip pain, we can help. Contact us for a consultation. We are eager to share with you how chiropractic alignments will reduce inflammation and provide much needed relief from trochanteric bursitis.
