As parents, none of us want our children to experience the misery of otitis media, or a middle ear infection. Untreated, these infections can lead to hearing loss, perforation of the tympanic membrane (ear drum), mastoiditis (rare, an inflammation of the mastoid bone, adjacent to the ear), meningitis or even paralysis of the facial nerve.

Why are children more prone to get middle ear infections than adults? In young children, the Eustachian tube (tube that leads from the middle ear to the throat and equalizes pressure behind the ear drum) is horizontal, which makes it more likely that fluids will gather in the middle ear, which allows germs in the throat and nose to easily migrate up the Eustachian tube and into the middle ear, causing infection. As the child matures, the Eustachian tube becomes more "downhill" from the middle ear to the throat, allowing the ear to drain and making it more difficult for pathogens to enter.

How can Chiropractic help treat and prevent Otitis Media? There is a likelihood that malalignment of the cervical spine, even very minor, can increase the probability that the Eustachian tube will fail to drain the middle ear properly, thus setting the child up for a middle ear infection. Gentle Chiropractic manipulation of the neck brings the spine into alignment and helps remove any kinks or bends in the Eustachian tube, thus allowing it to drain more effectively, keeping the ear dry and infection-free.
