Parenting an infant is a highly demanding task. Between feedings, two and three-hour stretches of sleeping, and frequent diaper changes, the round-the-clock care can be exhausting for even the most resilient new moms or dads. If an infant suffers from colic, incessant crying that can last for hours, the strain on the already weary caregivers can seem overwhelming. Between 13-16% of infants generally suffer from colic, and the cause is not well understood.

Types of Treatment

After reviewing the literature, one study concluded that current medical options either offer no better results than a placebo, or, in some cases, lead to undesired side effects. Chiropractic care is a feasible alternative treatment option. When 43 colicky infants were treated with two chiropractic approaches, either spinal manipulative therapy or occipitosacral decompression, both groups showed significantly reduced bouts of crying after a week of treatment. One month after beginning treatment, the majority of infants in both groups ceased to show signs of colic entirely, with the spinal manipulative therapy group displaying an impressive 82% success rate. These results suggest that unlike many other medical care options, chiropractic therapy can be a highly effective tool to treat infant colic.

Importance of Treatment

Infant colic may be linked to negative long-term behaviors. To investigate the influence of chiropractic care, two groups of children, some of whom had been treated for colic with chiropractic care as infants and some of whom had not, were compared as toddlers. The children who had received chiropractic care were twice as likely not to show long-term effects of infant colic, such as waking during the night or engaging in temper tantrums. Failing to treat colic can have repercussions that last for years after the colicky phase has ended.

Chiropractic care for colicky babies can be a way for parents to treat symptoms of colic in their infants and reduce the likelihood that their child will suffer from long-term effects. Safe and effective, chiropractic care is a viable and low-risk option that has been linked to high rates of success.
