One of the most remarkable chiropractors in the business was also known as "The man who made Peekskill famous," Dr. C.R. Johnston--first blind chiropractor. Born in the small mining town of Pioche, Nevada, Dr. Johnston was blinded by an accident at the age of 27. However, he did not allow this disability to hamper his desire to affect good in the world, so with great determination, Charles Johnston completed chiropractic training at the Palmer School of Chiropractic, and became the first blind chiropractor. He is noted as having been one of the most widely acclaimed chiropractors of his era. Known to many as "a miracle worker," Dr. Johnston attracted hundreds of patients to his Peekskill, New York practice each week.

Prior to becoming a chiropractor, Dr. Johnston had been a piano merchant, but reconsidered his skill set, and decided to engage in a profession that could provide more security for his future. After completing specialized training for the blind, Charles Johnston attended the Palmer School where he excelled at developing his new skills, and went on to achieve a successful practice.

One of his most notable cases was that of a young boy, Alonzo Smith, who, at age five, fell ill from sleeping sickness and went into a coma. After medical intervention, the child was still unconscious after 11 days, at which time he was presented to Dr. Johnston. Within 15 minutes after his arrival at Dr. Johnston's office, the boy is reported to have been awake and alert and conversing with friends and family for the first time in almost two weeks.

Even though Dr. Johnston was unable to see the boy, he listened carefully to accounts of the boy's symptoms and decided to adjust the boy's vertebrae at the top of his spinal column. As soon as the adjustment was made, the boy opened his eyes and soon thereafter, was able to walk across the room and crawl into the lap of his mother.

Just as the legendary Dr. Johnston brought relief to many people during his time as a chiropractor, the chiropractors of today are using new and improved techniques to accomplish pain relief and healing for literally millions of people around the world.
