Postural imbalance refers to poor posture. We have all seen poor posture, but what is it? There are two definitions of posture. Static posture is that which your body has when it is still. Dynamic posture is the posture of the body when it is moving. These two types of posture influence each other. When there is an imbalance, you can experience pain.

Good posture allows the body to function at its best. This is because the skeleton and muscles are seated as they should be, allowing all the organs of the body to function optimally. If there is poor posture, a chiropractor can seek to fix the underlying reasons. An assessment can be done to help you know where your body is out of alignment.

Sometimes poor posture is not caused by a traumatic event, but by repetitive bodily positions day-after-day. For example, someone who works at a computer screen all day may develop a kypholordotic posture, which is where the head is pushed forward and the shoulders are rounded. This unnatural position leads to muscular imbalance and an attempt to compensate for the strained position. Any attempt to compensate for any type of postural imbalance can lead to limited mobility and pain.

Besides repetitive work motions or positions, other activities that can create postural imbalance are sports, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and too tight or unnatural clothing, such as high heels. Proper exercise or certain exercises can help correct some imbalances.

A muscular imbalance is similar to driving a car that tends to pull to one side or another. Extra effort is needed to make the car drive straight. The pull on certain tires will cause them to wear faster than other tires. Eventually, the only way to solve the problem is with a tire alignment. The human body is the same. The body can compensate for bad posture, but eventually, there needs to be a re-alignment.
