Summer is for family vacation, and the most important thing when it is all said and done is to return home safely without a new or aggravated back problem. Usually, someone has a habit of packing too much, and the other someone, usually has to lift it into the vehicle. This can be the most dangerous part of the trip, because a serious back injury can occur while trying to sling that overweight bag up and into the storage area. Here are the three most important traveling and back safety tips reported by health experts.

  • Use luggage that is equipped with a set of wheels. Pulling a heavy bag, if done properly, is much less stressful to the back than carrying the entire weight. When pulling or carrying the luggage, keep your back straight, point your toes in the direction you are headed, and then turn your entire body when changing direction. Avoid twisting your back.

  • Do not overpack, but remain calm when dealing with this inevitability. A very good compatible solution is to have a multitude of smaller bags that no matter how much is stuffed into them, they remain back friendly. Also, a large bag is difficult to re-position in a small trunk while bending forward. The strain placed on the back in this position is a common way of causing a back injury.

  • Bend your knees when lifting. No matter how many time you hear this, it is the most important advice to keep a healthy back. The safe way to hoist luggage is to stand alongside of it, bend at the knees, grab the handle, and then straighten your legs. Practice this technique until you feel comfortable. It is just a matter of developing a healthy habit.

Lexington Family Chiropractic can help you understand healthy back habits or with any back-pain related problems.
