Ankle injuries can be intensely painful. Sometimes ankles are injured as simply as stepping incorrectly on your foot and having your ankle roll out from under you. If you have your ankle x-rayed you might be relieved to learn that it is not broken. It certainly seems like an injury to the ankle that didn't result in a fracture is a much better scenario.
Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Sometimes a fractured ankle actually heals more quickly than a sprained ankle. Certain sprains can continue to cause pain for months or even years. Traditional doctors are quick to treat breaks, but tend to ignore sprains with the advice to ice it and elevate it.
