Sometimes simple ways to keep ourselves healthy are not so easy in practice. However, the benefits that individuals will gain from following some simple steps throughout their lifetime, will result in a better quality of life and less physical troubles from tense muscles, painful nerve issues and perhaps even more serious spinal problems.

The three best steps to maintaining a healthy spinal column throughout an individual's life are maintaining a healthy weight, following a plan for stretching muscles throughout the back and cervical regions and following an exercise plan to keep back and neck muscles strong and toned. It is not easy to combat the body's tendency to gain weight over time. However, one need only to try to pick up a heavy item such as a 40 pound bag of sand to imagine how difficult it is for our spinal structures to carry around excess weight on a daily basis. Keeping weight gain to a minimum throughout one's life, goes a long way to help maintain spinal integrity.

Another basic component of spinal health are regular exercises that properly stretch the back and cervical regions. Our sedentary lifestyles almost always include a great deal of time spent sitting in front of a TV, video game or laptop. These types of activities strain muscles in the spinal and cervical regions which then react by gradually pulling the spinal column out of alignment.

Although some may think stretching a muscle is the same as strengthening it, the two activities are not the same. In addition to stretching muscles, it is also necessary to maintain a regular exercise program to keep spinal muscles strengthened and toned. Our muscles provide a great deal of support to our spinal structures and they are greatly impaired from doing so when they are not strong and toned.
