Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is often caused by smoking. When someone hears the word COPD, an image of the inhalers that are used to treat the disease may come to mind. However, it has been discovered that chiropractic treatments are also useful for COPD.

Currently, over 200 million people worldwide have COPD. Experts believe that by 2020, COPD will be the third leading cause of death. Chiropractors can help their patients regarding this respiratory problem. It is possible to breathe better after a treatment. Of course, a most important first step is that the patient stop smoking. Plus, there are lifestyle changes in terms of exercise and nutrition that can be beneficial. Chiropractors can provide education along these lines as well.

In one study regarding the benefits of chiropractic treatment, some subjects aged 65 years or older were given osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Others were given sham treatments. There were 35 participants in the study. The OMT group had 18 participants, the sham group had 17 participants.

"The OMT group also had a statistically significant increase in the residual volume, total lung capacity, and the ratio of those values compared with the sham group."

The reason chiropractic treatment is helpful is because it increases joint mobility and muscle flexibility. This helps reduce chest wall rigidity, which it turn improves the breathing capabilities of the patient. Besides the OMT treatments, it has also been found that spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is useful as well. There is "preliminary evidence that SMT may have the potential to benefit lung function in patients with COPD who are older than 65 years." (source)
