Back pain is a common ailment among adults. The pain can be the cause of a slipped disk or a body that is simply “out-of-whack” because of constant sitting, weight gain, or a number of other causes.
Unfortunately, back pain or no back pain, responsibilities go on. Cobwebs and dust bunnies creep in when and where we are least expecting them. Carpets and windows and ceiling fans must be wiped and cleaned. Many adults, particularly women, find that when they use a broom they have almost instantaneous discomfort in the back. There is constant twisting and turning that can cause excessive pressure, and pain. Housework chores such as standing for long periods at a sink or cooking, carrying large loads of laundry or groceries or repetitive motions such as dusting up and down can cause back pain that takes us out of the game for the rest of the day.
Here are a few tips for cleaning your house and not hurting your back:
Dusters and brooms with longer handles, step stools and shifting our weight when standing for long periods of time will go a long way in preventing excruciating stiffness and pain. Rugs on hard wood floors help alleviate the pressure on the back as well.
In addition to using the right equipment, it is also important to know our own body and to warm up before starting on chores. A good stretch before and after we clean doesn't take long but goes a long way in keeping our back from freezing up. A good 10-15 minute walk will also help work out some of the kinks and twinges that build up. It's also a good idea to break up the chores, particularly vacuuming, sweeping or mopping multiple rooms in a day.
If there is consistent pain, it might be a good idea to see a specialist to evaluate the problem. Long term back pain can cause further problems, such as pain in the legs and tiredness. It can even interrupt our bathroom routines. A chiropractor can take a quick look and make any necessary adjustments. This could make all the difference in the world in being physically able to complete the tasks at hand.
A good treatment center can offer chiropractic, massage therapy and other important preventative health tips to help you get away from a back pain that keeps you down so often. Going back to the same habits that hurt your back will only send you back to the same specialist, back to bed, or simply unable to do the work you are responsible for.
