Certainly it is evident our muscular system is intricately connected to the spinal column as spinal misalignment and muscle tension almost always go hand in hand. So is it possible that muscles could be positively affected such as in increase in muscle strength with chiropractic care? Some chiropractic studies suggest this could be so.

Of course most people who have visited a chiropractor are already familiar with the concept that when there is spinal column misalignment, nerves can become pinched, resulting in symptoms of numbness, tingling and perhaps even weakness in our extremities. Our nerves are also regulators for our muscular system as well. Just as when a nerve is severely pinched and can actually cause muscle weakness over time, the opposite is true. If nerves are fully functional and receiving their proper impulses, our muscles are receiving their impulses and are able to fully function as well.

A study in the journal, Experimental Brain Research conducted by The New Zealand College of Chiropractic's Centre for Chiropractic Research, showed there was a 45% increase in the activation activity that occurs between the brain and in the case of the study, a leg muscle, after a full spinal chiropractic adjustment was given to a patient.

Of course, the goal of chiropractic care is to align the spine so nerves and muscles are able to function normally. As chiropractic adjustments realign the spine, muscles lose their tension, range of motion increases and patients are able to use their muscles freely. This allows stretching and strengthening exercises to become effective in helping a patient increase their muscle strength.
