Many people have a beloved grandparent or aunt or uncle who were doing fairly well living an independent life on their own until they slipped or lost their balance and fell. After the fall, even with surgery and perhaps even physical therapy, he or she simply could not return to their former lifestyle. Instead they lived out the rest of their senior years in a wheelchair and/or in an assisted-care facility.

The above is a very common scenario but there are things the elderly can do to avoid this very same situation from happening to them. Fall prevention is one of the best methods for enabling the elderly to live an independent life in their own home for as many years as possible.

As we age, we all experience sarcopenia, or loss in muscle mass. Losing muscle mass and tone means an individual's muscles are weaker and less able to provide the proper strength and coordination for even simple actions like walking and standing. It is also common for older individuals, for a variety of reasons, to experience balance problems. Between the muscle waning and balance problems, it is easy to see how an elderly individual could suffer a fall.

A fall prevention plan includes a number of things. No matter how old you are, if your physician clears you to begin an exercise program, you should start. Muscle strengthening exercises and those exercises that focus on improving balance and coordination are a must to include in your exercise program. Good nutritional habits can help support your body as well, and if you smoke it is never too late to quit.

Here at Lexington Family Chiropractic, we can provide the expert guidance needed to create a well-rounded program to help individuals stay on their feet and maintain their independent lifestyle as long as possible.
