You’re working your fingers on your computer – the usual routine you do everyday – and you try not to notice that tingling sensation you’ve felt from your arm down to your hands.  They didn’t really hurt a few days ago, but now you feel a painful pierce and burn within your wrist joints.  Wondering if it’s more than just a cramp?  Most probably – it could be a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful disorder which occurs when the median nerve is entrapped in the carpal tunnel of the wrist joint.  The median nerve is a relatively large nerve which originates from the forearm and runs to the hands and fingers, supplying sensation to the palms and to most of the small muscles of the hand.  With that definition, it would be understandable to feel cramping or piercing sensation when this nerve is squeezed within the tunnel.  This condition frequently occurs in musicians, typists, and individuals who are into manual work – manufacturing, cleaning, and sewing.  They are more prone because of the daily repetitive bending motion that they do with their hands.  Women, unfortunately, are three times more affected than men, having a smaller carpal tunnel compared to men.  Sometimes, you feel the cramp and tingling sensation when you have slept the whole night with a flexed wrist.

For the medical practitioner, the first line of treatment for this disorder is medication, usually ibuprofen, aspirin, and other antiinflammatory drugs.  For a carpal tunnel syndrome that is caused by underlying diseases such as arthritis and diabetes, consultation to a doctor is recommended so that the primary cause is treated first.  Wrist supports can be beneficial, especially at night to prevent the wrist from being flexed.

Surgery is the doctor’s next treatment of choice for someone suffering from the condition for more than six months.  Carpal tunnel release is performed by open release and endoscopic surgery – both done by severing the structures in the wrist joint to decrease pressure in the median nerve.

For the chiropractor, the thing she will look into is the person’s lower neck, where the brachial plexus is, which is where the median nerve derives its roots.  Cervical manipulations are combined with gentle oscillations and movements of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist to release pressure on the median nerve.  The chiropractic program also includes modalities, such as ultrasound, a nutritional plan, and collaborating with the physical therapist to formulate a well-planned exercise regimen that is geared towards pain relief and improvement of grip strength and hand function.
