Getting Relief From Fibromyalgia Pain
By Dr. Heath Gallentine, DC

Fibromyalgia is a disabling myofascial condition which often results in the patient having pain all over their body. This disorder can affect many parts of the patient's life and can cause a decrease in the quality of life.

The most common symptom of Fibromyalgia is pain and fatigue in muscles. However, there are many other symptoms that the patient may have. Therefore, it is a misconception that Fibromyalgia is a disease. It is, rather, a symptom to a bigger syndrome. Because of this variety of symptoms, it becomes rather hard to tell whether the patient is really suffering from the syndrome or not.   To have fibromyalgia, a patient usually experiences pain in all four quadrants of the body that lasts more or less continuously for three months. Pain will also be felt in most tender points in the body.  Several other symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia include morning stiffness, chronic headaches, fatigue, menstrual irregularities, sleep disorders, muscle weakness, depression as well as anxiety.

Treatment for Fibromyalgia is geared toward treating the symptoms with medication. However, because of the variety of symptoms the patient may experience, the patient may find his/herself taking many medications. Therefore, many patients are looking for an alternative. Chiropractic care may provide that alternative.

Some people might think that chiropractic care is of no use for the treatment of Fibromyalgia since this disorder is not attributed to the spinal column, but on the fascia, which serves as a cover of the muscle tissues. However, some doctors often consider chiropractic treatment to treat Fibromyalgia patients other than giving them drugs to relieve them from pain. Chiropractic can often deliver significant results more than taking pills. In fact, taking pain reliever pills often can affect how the central nervous system (CNS) process information. The more pain medication that is taken, the more your body becomes numb towards external stimulus. Therefore, your body can no longer react properly to certain stimuli.

As mentioned earlier, fibromyalgia is a problem of the central nervous system that often results in hypersensitivity to stimuli.  The principle behind chiropractic is that the health is controlled by the state of the individual's central nervous system. Spinal adjustments are the mainstay of chiropractic treatments. By relieving pressure on the spinal nerves through spinal manipulation, this can allow proper nerve pathways, thus reduce the pain to the body. Manipulating the infraspinatus trigger points can also reduce the irritability by means of cervical adjustments. In fact, the spinal manipulation on the C5 and C6 cervical segments can reduce the irritability of the infraspinatus trigger points that greatly affect the fascia. The more frequent the adjustments are, the more the dramatic the relief from the irritability that a patient experiences.

Chiropractic treatment can alleviate many symptoms of this disorder. Although chiropractic treatment does not cure the disease itself, it can help patients alleviate the symptoms of the disease. Many chiropractors also incorporate other therapies to their treatment, which also produces great results. Massage therapy has been found to enhance the results of the treatment when coupled with the chiropractic adjustments. However, because of the sensitivity to stimuli, more often light massage needs to be performed, as to not cause the patient any additional discomfort. Massage therapy helps to increase circulation to those muscles, therefore helping to alleviate this muscular pain.

The patient can also get a more speedy recovery if chiropractic therapy will be coupled with life style modifications such as getting enough rest and eating a healthy diet. In fact, patients with Fibromyalgia who use chiropractic care often experience more of a sense of well-being than those who just take medication. Chiropractic has aided many patients with Fibromyalgia by reducing the symptoms associated with the syndrome thus the quality of life of most Fibromyalgia patients have improved.

Although there is no cure for Fibromyalgia, a patient with this syndrome has other options in addition to medication. Trying Chiropractic care can allow the patient to undergo a more natural approach to treatment. This can increase the quality of life, as well as feeling a sense of freedom from the constraints of the disorder. Find a Chiropractor that has had successful outcomes with treatment, and start increasing your quality of life.
